We at Hawk and Heron Clay strive to provide a safe and positive environment for our students to create in.  To provide the best possible experience, we ask that everybody be Responsible and adhere to our studio Policies and Procedures.

  1. No refunds or rescheduling.  Please make sure of your schedule before you sign up for a Class, Lesson, or Workshop.

  2. Please Arrive and Leave at your scheduled time for lessons.  Communicate with your instructor if you will be arriving early or late and/or will need additional time.  Because the studio is also our home, we appreciate that you respect our time and space.

  3. If you miss a class for any reason, you may make-up the missed class as long as (1) we have space for you and (2) it is discussed within 1 week of the missed class.

  4. To keep clay dust to a minimum, Clean your work area thoroughly at the end of your lesson

This includes wiping down your equipment used, table and floor properly, washing all tools and any other area that dust or slip may have transferred to such as the walls, windows or plastic totes that contain your clay.

This is for everyone’s safety. Clay dust is harmful if inhaled. It is not acceptable to work until the end of class and then rush your clean-up.

  5. Once your work is bisqued, it is your responsibility to finish the piece within a reasonable time frame.  You cannot leave your bisque pieces for storage indefinitely.  If you cannot decide what to do with your pieces, please take them home with you while you decide.  We do not have enough space to store everyone’s work.  We reserve the right to throw away pieces that have been on the shelves for longer than 1 month.

  6. Once your work is glaze fired, you must take it home.  Once again, we have limited space. There will be no refiring of work.  Refiring rarely results in a better piece and not everything you make will come out the way you intended.  Chalk it up to a learning experience.  While we will try to ensure your success, there is no such thing as a 100% success rate.

  7. We often use ceramic “cookies” to protect our kiln shelves.  If the glaze is too thick or too runny, it will flow off the cookie onto the shelf.  Glaze leaking onto shelves will incur a grinding fee of $10-30 a piece and will be dependent on the size and severity of leakage.  If the glaze leak is significant, we may ask for you to replace the kiln shelf (1/2 shelf- $40, full shelf $60).  If you would like your glaze drip to be ground off your piece, there will be a $10-20 charge, depending on the size and scope.  Please note, there is no guarantee that the piece will look the way you want once ground down. You are paying for the extra time and energy it takes to work on said piece. Please be careful if using a fluxing/runny glaze. Always be sure to check your glaze thickness and to wipe it back properly.
