Face Value: Mold-Making, Clay, and Monstrous Transformations with Thaddeus Erdahl
3-Day Workshop/October 23-25/10am-4pm Daily
Have you ever imagined yourself as a zombie, mummy, goblin, ghoul, or werewolf? Maybe you would rather extend your forehead, add a few neck bolts, and become Frankenstein’s monster or the Bride of Frankenstein. In this playful three-day workshop, we’ll use professional mold making materials and ceramic techniques to transform our own faces into something entirely new.
Working in teams of three, participants will use Smooth-On Body Double silicone to create individualized molds of their faces. We will then use those molds to press clay and produce an accurate likeness in just a few minutes.
From there, the real adventure begins. We’ll alter, stretch, distort, and reimagine the press-molded faces while keeping their essential proportions intact. Your face might become a wall planter, sculpture, jar, vessel, mask, or something completely unexpected. Since the workshop falls near Halloween, you are encouraged to embrace the season and explore the strange, creepy, humorous, and monstrous.
Once your mold is complete, the workshop becomes a choose-your-own-adventure story. You might take the left fork in the road while everyone else goes right—and that is exactly the point.
Come with a few ideas, an open mind, and a willingness to experiment. You’ll leave with an original clay creation ready to be fired and a reusable silicone mold of your own face—a unique tool you can return to again and again.
